Johnny Depp and Kate Moss met in 1994 at New York’s hip Caf Tabac. He was 31, Moss was 20. “I knew from the first moment we talked that we were going to be together,” the model has said. The high-profile couple jet-setted around the globe, depending on where they were working – Moss didn’t have a permanent home at the time, and Depp, who had just invested in the Viper Room in L.A., frequented Hollywood hot spots the Chateau Marmont and the Hollywood Roosevelt. They were never shy about showing their affection for one another in public. “They can’t keep their hands, lips, mouths, legs off of each other,” a friend of Depp’s told PEOPLE in ’94.
Their passion for one another spilled over into heated arguments. The couple was spotted shouting at each other in public, according to reports, and one reported spat resulted in Depp’s arrest. At 5:30 a.m. on September 13, 1994, the actor was arrested for criminal mischief at New York’s Mark Hotel for allegedly trashing his hotel room. Police found Depp “in a state of possible intoxication” and Moss uninjured. A criminal-court judge dismissed the charge against Depp on the condition that he stay out of trouble for six months. Depp paid the Mark $9,767.12 including more than $2,000 for damages, plus the bill for the remainder of his reservation.
“I think Johnny obviously has a temper,” his friend, director John Waters told PEOPLE at the time of the incident. “But this is a very minor incident. The room service must have been bad.”
Depp was not the only one who could be a menace to hotel rooms. Although the couple called it quits in 1997 after four years and a rumored engagement, they appeared together briefly at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 1998, where Moss was reprimanded for wearing her bikini in the hallways of the discreet, glamorous Hotel du Cap. She reportedly trashed her hotel room and was banned from setting foot in the place for life.
And a few months earlier in January 1998, Moss denied reports speculating that she and Depp had ordered a champagne-filled bath at a West London hotel after word surfaced that a model and an actor had requested the luxurious treat, which uses 36 bottles of bubbly. “It was not her. It was not Kate, it’s not her style. She doesn’t use the hotel anymore,” a rep for Moss’ modeling agency Storm said at the time, according to The Independent.
Moss said in 2012 she cried for “years” after their relationship ended: “There’s nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, ‘What do I do?,’ he’d tell me. And that’s what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust.”
