Distinctive Feature |
In his youth he was athletic and highly intelligent. A contemporary observer described him thus: 'he speaks good French, Latin and Spanish; is very religious; heard three masses daily when he hunted ... He is extremely fond of hunting, and never takes that diversion without tiring eight or ten horses ... He is also fond of tennis'..., "He was a Renaissance Prince - fervently interested in science and the arts, and particularly music"..., "Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived"..., A man of pleasure who, unlike his father Henry VII, delegated Government decisions to others - he only liked to mix business with pleasure..., Had a short attention span and was easily bored..., Physically "very stout and marvellously excessive in eating and drinking"..., The former Carthusian monk Andrew Boorde examines Henry and finds him ‘fleshy’ with large arteries, ruddy cheeks and pale skin, with his ‘hair plenty and red, pulse great and full digestion perfect, anger short [and] sweat abundant". He is alarmed by Henry’s obesity..., "Henry now finds it difficult to ride and so, on his beloved hunting trips, stags are brought before him to shoot"..., "Henry’s mobility is impaired. Two ‘king’s trams’ – rather like sedan chairs – are purchased to carry him around the royal apartments. A hoist may have been used to lift him up from the ground floor of his palaces – to avoid using stairs"..., He had leg ulcers, muscle weakness, and, according to some accounts, a significant personality shift in middle age towards more paranoia, anxiety, depression and mental deterioration...

Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) was King of England from 1509 until his death in 1547. Henry is best known for his six marriages, and, in particular, his efforts to have his first marriage (to Catherine of Aragon) annulled. His disagreement with Pope Clement VII about such an annulment led Henry to initiate the English Reformation, separating the Church of England from papal authority. He appointed himself Supreme Head of the Church of England and dissolved convents and monasteries, for which he was excommunicated. Henry is also known as "the father of the Royal Navy," as he invested heavily in the navy, increasing its size from a few to more than 50 ships, and established the Navy Board.
