Cheyenne and her half-brother Christian, from Brando's first marriage to actor Anna Kashfi, were the moody superstar's acknowledged favorites. He alternately spoilt and ignored them and they ended up on drugs. By that time, Cheyenne had fallen in love with Dag Drollet, a son of a prominent Tahitian family. In 1989 she crashed Drollet's jeep in a rage after Brando had withdrawn an invitation for her to visit him while he was filming The Freshman in Toronto.
The facial injuries she suffered, including the loss of part of her ear, ended her modelling career and pushed her further into depression and drugs. Drollet stood by Cheyenne during her fights with depression, schizophrenia and chemical abuse. They had lived together for more than a year before Cheyenne’s accident, but friends said Dag was losing patience with Cheyenne’s inability or unwillingness to give up the drugs. His relatives warned him to leave the “unhappy Brando family.” The following year, when Cheyenne was pregnant with Tuki, she and Drollet went to stay at Brando's house in Los Angeles. Cheyenne and Christian went out to dinner, during which Cheyenne apparently told Christian that Drollet was violent towards her. When they returned to the house, a drunken Christian went into the room where Drollet was watching television and shot him in the head.
Christian was sentenced to 10 years' jail for voluntary manslaughter, while a distraught Cheyenne, who had by then been diagnosed as a schizophrenic, was shuttled in and out of psychiatric hospitals. When Tuki was born, custody was granted to his grandmother, Tarita, in Tahiti. In 1995, when Tuki was four, Cheyenne, then 25, hanged herself.
