Barbara Windsor has described how she once became a notch on George Best’s bedpost.
She told how she and Best, who was nine years her junior, had a brief liaison following a film premiere in the 1960s, at the height of the former Manchester United footballer’s fame.
Miss Windsor, who had married gangster Ronnie Knight in 1964, said: ‘There was this vision, this absolute vision. In the Sixties he was so beautiful.
‘Anyway, in the bar afterwards he came over to me and I said, “Look, don’t waste your time with me, darling. You’ve got all these lovely ladies after you”.
‘And he said, “Well, when do I ever get to talk to somebody like you?” Well, that did it. That was it. A magic moment. It was great, he was fabulous.’
Twice-married Best, who died in 2005 aged 59, boasted of sleeping with thousands of women including four Miss Worlds, actresses Susan George and Sinead Cusack, and singer Lynsey de Paul. But he never mentioned his fling with Miss Windsor, who went on to play Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders.
