Avril Lavigne never imagined the two loves of her life would be in the same place at the same time. Covering the June/July 2013 issue of Nylon, she reveals that she first laid eyes on fiance Chad Kroeger while she was dating Sum 41's Deryck Whibley, whom she divorced in 2010 after four years of marriage.
The trio crossed paths at the Roxy nightclub in Vancouver more than a decade ago, according to Lavigne. "Wild, right?" she laughs. "I was 17, and 'Complicated' had just come out.'"
Lavigne was celebrating the success of her debut single with Jaeger bombs, and as Whibley carried her out of the venue over his shoulder, she spotted the Nickelback frontman partying nearby. "He didn't even know who I was at that point!" the singer says of Kroeger. "I had just gotten on the radio."
Then in 2004 both appeared at the Much Music Video Awards.
Lavigne, 27, and Kroeger, 37, first got together in February to co-write a song for Lavigne's upcoming fifth studio album.
“We met in the studio. We started dating July 1 – Canada Day” she remembers. On Aug. 8, Kroeger popped the question, presenting Lavigne with a 14-carat diamond sparkler.
“It happened in their recording studio. She was scrapbooking and he added a page to the scrapbook, and the page said: ‘Will you marry me?’” Alison Eastwood, editor-in-chief of Hello! Canada, said.
“We bonded through work, music and song writing. We were buddies and it blossomed naturally into a relationship.”
Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger's relationship was so quiet that few even knew they were dating.
On August 21 2012 Hello! Canada magazine published in the front cover that after a six-month courtship, the Canadian rockers were engaged to be married.
"He makes her so happy," a family source tells PEOPLE. "Both of their families could not be more excited."
On July 1st 2013, Canada Day and also their first anniversary, Avril and Chad married at the beautiful Chateau de la Napoule, a medieval castle from the fourteenth century on the French Riviera.
